Autoimmune Thyroiditis (Hashimoto's Disease)

Canine Autoimmune Thyroiditis is a genetic disease (about 50% of the hypothyroidism-diagnosed dogs suffer from that form of hypothyroidism). Hypothyroidism is not considered to be a life-threatening disease and therefore many cases might not be detected at all, as the disease can be asymptomatic. Prior to breeding, dogs should be tested for proper thyroid-function.

Treatment consists in application of L-thyroxine (T4) tbl. twice a day (dosage depending on weight).
